X-men Origins: Wolverine has received tons of negative feedback following its highly anticipated May 1st release. While I found the film relative enjoyable, I understand most of the complaints that hardcore comic book fans and movie critics alike have been harping on. To the average moviegoer, the film accomplishes what it is set out to do, to entertain. From the beginning to end the film is well paced, has plenty of action sequences, gushy lovey-dovey moments (for the chicks), and even some unexpected cameos (Quicksilver?!). Still, the film contains a few flaws and complaints that most fans can't seem to get over. Some of the more common movie complaints are as follows:
1. The film strays too far from the source material.
While there are several different incarnations of the X-Men source material, many believe this particular story doesn't really fit into any of them.
2. Wolverine's claws looked fake during the bathroom scene.
I definitely thought I was the only one to notice this when the scene played out on the movie screen, but that proved not to be the case when I visited the IMDB boards. The rest of the special effects looked great for the most part, but Logan's claws during the scene were laughable.
3. The writers took too many creative liberties with the character Deadpool.
In my opinion, Ryan Reynolds did a great job of portraying Wade Wilson during the 5 minutes of screen time that he had. Unfortunately, they butchered Deadpool aka Weapon XI giving him far too many powers, sewing his mouth shut(he's dubbed "Merc with a Mouth" for a reason), and not giving him his trademark suit. Although the last discrepancy is somewhat acceptable, I can't get over the fact that they gave Deadpool retractable swords, optic blasts, teleportation (even though he had a teleporting device in the comics), and sewed his mouth shut.
4. Gambit
I honestly thought Taylor Kitsch did a decent job with Gambit. I wasn't expecting him to have a Cajun accent at all so I was glad to hear that had one albeit somewhat watered down. My only complaint was that his eyes weren't black with pink irises, but whatever. He was fine in my opinion.
5. Jimmy/ Logan confusion
To the average movie goer, it was a bit confusing having Sabretooth call Wolverine, Jimmy, while most everyone else called him Logan. They could have explained how he decided to take up the name of the man who he mistakenly killed and later found out was his true father.
6. Liev Schreiber instead of Tyler Mane
Although they used two different actors for the character of Sabretooth in X-men Origins and the original X-men movie, I wasn't too bothered by it. Schreiber's a beast actor and definitely did his thing. The way I see it is that the Sabretooth in X-men 1 was just a more evolved, feral version of the character.
Although there are plenty of complaints and tons of negative reviews, I enjoyed the movie. Overall I give it a 7 out of 10 because it kept me entertained. There was plenty of good action, Jackman and Schreiber did their thing as the main leading and supporting role and other actors like Ryan Reynolds and Danny Huston were pretty spot on. It could have been better and stuck closer to the source material, but they movie isn't as bad as many are stating and worth seeing especially if you're not a huge fan of the comics who just plans to sit back and nitpick.
